whitney - no woman (2016)

this song popped up on spotify and i was very pleased with it, but surprised to discover that it was a recent song by a group of young white boys! wow! there's a depth to this tune / production that belies that fact. nice song!

francis the great - look up in the sky (1977)

francis the great a french/cameroonian kid singer in paris, lighting up this afro funk track! the rare album was recorded in 1977, but only recently re-released in 2015 on hot casa records + is now featured on spotify if you have the right kinda "discover weekly" algorithms.

stereo total - orange mechanique

i used to listen to stereo total in high school!! now it's 11 years later and my head is spinning!

this track is a wonderful, compact morsel - like so many stereo total songs. i love the dramatic opening, the monologue, and the thematic go-go portion that follows... evocative of a monster B-movie. stereo total transcends time and space!

billy joe royal - leaning on you

this is the dude of "down in the boondocks" one-hit-wonder fame!

this is actually a pretty good album by '60s pop standards. enjoying listening to it this morning!

trio los panchos & estela raval - martha (1971)

a wildly romantic love ballad sung by three men and a lady to a lady named martha. they compare her to a flower (of course), then claim that they are jealous of the water, the sun and the air that surrounds her (yowza!). lovely little bolero. (the lady singer, incidentally, is a legendary argentinean singer, collaborating here with a famous mexican trio.)

haruomi hosono - bara to yajyu (rose & beast) (1973)

when i woke up this morning, i had this song playing in my head. the up-and-down bass riff was haunting me. it felt like i had either dreamed it up, or it was a song that my brain was pulling up from a long long time ago, something formative that had been wedged in my subconscious and dredged up during the night.

then i remembered that i had been listening to haruomi hosono yesterday, and went through my listening history to see if the track could be found. i pressed play on this one and there it was -- the song! the dream vision!
