haruomi hosono - bara to yajyu (rose & beast) (1973)
when i woke up this morning, i had this song playing in my head. the up-and-down bass riff was haunting me. it felt like i had either dreamed it up, or it was a song that my brain was pulling up from a long long time ago, something formative that had been wedged in my subconscious and dredged up during the night.
then i remembered that i had been listening to haruomi hosono yesterday, and went through my listening history to see if the track could be found. i pressed play on this one and there it was -- the song! the dream vision!

fleetwood mac - dreams (take 2) (1976)
this is a more stripped-down version of "dreams," as nicks and buckingham worked together to flesh out what would eventually become the wall of sound that this song eventually became. the final cut is perfect in what it evokes: "crystal visions" and dreams; life advice from your inner voices; baptismals into new chapters of your life. this take is rather nice on its own terms, though: the beautiful simplicity of stevie nicks' voice dancing across the thin layer of bass and guitar underneath. it's clear that she put a lot of thought into her phrasing and voice here. you can feel the impact of every line...
